Our Story

  The History of New Haven

  New Haven History

In 1995, a group of dedicated and passionate professionals left their secure jobs and guaranteed paychecks to follow their friends Mark McGregor and Craig Lamont into their new venture – creating a therapeutic haven and school for adolescent girls. As New Haven’s primary founder, Mark had a vision of a residential treatment center for young women that was different than anything else that existed at the time. There was a distinct focus on family healing, values, and helping students develop internal motivation. New Haven would feel like a home, a family, and a haven from all that had led these adolescents and their families to seek healing and refuge.

Mark and the other founding employees of New Haven worked hard, sacrificed much, and were incredibly fortunate to build the haven they envisioned. Alongside Mark and Craig were other outstanding trailblazers who helped shape every aspect of New Haven’s program. New Haven’s growth over the next 20 years was evidence of the need for what the program provided. By 2000, a second home was built. A third home on a second campus was added in 2001. Fourth, fifth, and sixth homes were built in 2006, 2013 and 2014. New Haven has now served over 1,800 families! We are so fortunate to be able to continue the legacy and foundation built by those who envisioned all that New Haven could, and would, be.

    "2005

As New Haven has grown, so have the ways we work to meet the needs of the adolescents and their families we have the opportunity to serve. Our clinical team now includes 17 therapists and five recreation therapists, each trained in a trauma-focused modality. Our school has become a true college prep environment, teaching 11 AP courses every year. Our students have the opportunity to play volleyball, basketball, and soccer against other small high schools in the area. We have nurses on campus around the clock to help care for the medical needs of our students. Four dogs, a dozen cats, and 20 horses call our campuses home. Each of these additions to New Haven’s program supports the original intent of New Haven – to be a therapeutic haven and school, where each of our students can make peace with their past, thrive in the present, and create a hopeful future hand-in-hand with their family.

I followed a similar path to New Haven as many of New Haven’s founding employees. After working in another residential treatment setting, and knowing there had to be a better way, I found New Haven. I started as a therapist in 2006 and had the opportunity to work in clinical leadership for many years before becoming New Haven’s Executive Director in 2019. My responsibility to continue providing world-class mental healthcare and education in a residential setting is not one I take lightly. I am so lucky to work here alongside 200 other like-minded colleagues, who all truly want your child and family to heal. I know that considering residential treatment for your child is an overwhelming and heartbreaking decision. I am honored that you are considering New Haven. Please reach out with any questions you have. We are ready to help.

    "DSC_6927-1"
