Justin Spitzer, BA, MA

History Teacher

Saratoga Springs Campus

Justin grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as an avid hiker, swimmer, and student of history. He earned a B.A. in History from the University of Michigan and a M.A. in American History from the University of Connecticut. Before coming to New Haven in 2018, he taught at another college prep therapeutic boarding school in Utah from 2007 – 2017.

Justin’s courses highlight the fact that history and government are open to interpretation, not black and white. His students examine various interpretations of why events unfolded the way they did and are encouraged to read, think, and write critically. Ultimately, after studying a variety of different perspectives, students develop and defend their own arguments. To assist in this process, students examine and discuss a wide variety of primary and secondary sources – Justin does not use a textbook in any of his classes. His classes are rigorous yet rewarding. His goal is to prepare students for college and for them to leave his class saying it was one of the most challenging, but also one of the most interesting, classes they’ve ever had.

Justin’s passion for history and teaching is matched only by his love for the outdoors. He has hiked and backpacked extensively throughout the United States, including a thru-hike of the 2,150 mile Appalachian Trail in 2001. When not teaching he can often be found exploring Utah’s many mountains, deserts, and canyons. He is also an avid sports fan, especially college football and basketball.
